At TyreQuote.com we don’t just talk tyres. Many of our customers come to us looking for new tyres for their used vehicles. In a tough economic climate, its important when buying a used car you are getting value for money. Here’s our guide so you know what to look out for.

1. Check the Basics

Sounds simple doesn’t it? But you wouldn’t believe how many buyers fail to check the very basis on any used model. Always inspect the bodywork in a good light and be weary of rust depending on age. Have a good look along the sills and below front and rear bumpers. Ensure that the brake pedal offers good resistance, it will be a good indication on wear. It should not sink to the floor when you press it.

2. Make Sure you’re Getting Value

Smaller cars depreciate less over a 12 month period, not only are they cheaper to run, they’re often more practical depending on use. Check out the market before you shop and monitor how much cars lose value.

3. Watch out for Fraud

Never buy a car without its log book, and check online to verify the cars reg, colour and engine size. Ensure that these match the document. Ask to see if there are any advisories on the last MOT. Check for worn tyres – they can be expensive to replace! It’s probably worthwhile to do a history check also, and see if they car has any outstanding finance claims and how many owners it’s actually had.

4. Pick the Right Color

It may sound shallow, but go for a car colour that always holds value. Silver cars are always desirable, but bear in mind for example white cars and the difficulty of keeping them clean. Be practical too.

5. How to Haggle

Before you look for a used car; do your research. Know your stuff, it will probably save you a little money when it comes to price. Start low, but be realistic, and set a ultimatium. Do not be afraid to walk away it you are not 100% sure. Buying a car does not come cheap!

6. Check Insurance Prices

If you are upgrading to a bigger engine or a sportier car, be wary of how much this will impact your car insurance; especially for younger drivers. Get a few quotes beforehand, and especially before you buy the car. Otherwise your monthly outgoing’s could increase.
