Councils across the Midlands have taken not of the part-worn epidemic spreading across the industry, and have this week issued further warnings to motorists about the dangers of buying part-worn tyres.

Leicestershire has been the latest council to publicly warn motorists about the dangers of driving on a part worn tyre. Despite the industry growing, the key danger is the lack of knowledge about buying part-worn tyres amongst motorists. It is not illegal to but part-worn tyres, however these tyres must adhere to strict regulations.

Officers across Leicestershire conducted their own consumer research, and the results were amongst some of the worst to date in the country. Out of 17 tyres purchased, only one tyre was marked ‘part-worn’ meaning the other 16 tyres blatantly ignored regulations. David Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “It is worrying that almost a quarter of the part-worn tyres sold and fitted during this survey were unsafe.v”It is vital that sellers have systems to check that all part-worn tyres they sell are safe and are fitted correctly. ”
