Its that time of year again… with this weekend set to be one of the busiest on the UK’s roads, as people from across the UK drive home for the Christmas break we give you essential tips that will get you through one of the years most hectic journeys.
At this time of year we often forget the essential driving tips which can make our journey so much easier, but by making a plan and sticking to it, you can ensure you arrive on time and safe.
- Check your tyres: Yes we have spent a great deal of 2012 talking about how to check your tyres and why it is so important…but it really is! With the British unpredictable weather, you need to make sure your tyres are up to scratch to save you sliding and skidding on the roads. Don’t risk it. Spend 5 minutes before you set off to check tyre pressure, tread and for any cuts or punctures. It could save your life.
- Plan ahead: Plan your journey and alternative routes. A great deal of the UK has been flooded over the month with many major routes closed or restricted, so check before you set off if any of the roads you plan to use are affected.
- Get the essentials: Make sure your phone is charged and you are prepared. Fill the tank up so you don’t have to stop off and delay your journey. Instead make sure you have everything you need to make your journey enjoyable and safe, from spare blankets to your favourite Christmas CD!
- Don’t risk the drink: Its tempting to have a few pints with friends before you set off home, but don’t risk it. Police across the UK are clamping down on drink driving over Christmas so be prepared to stop unexpectedly if the police pull you over. Rather than estimating how much you have had to drink, keep off it until you arrive home.
- Have a very Merry Christmas: No explanation needed!
