The Range Rover, simply put is an icon of the British motor industry. The innovation that Spencer King utilized in designing and bringing us the first off road/road car resulted in a whole new niche of automobiles that are bearing such fruits today. However, none of these imitations can touch the standards and heritage of the superb Range Rover. With nearly 45 years being in production, this SUV (sports utility vehicle) is still hugely popular and sold all over the world, with newer models being developed regularly.
Loved by everyone from farmers to politicians, to mothers and teenagers, the Range Rover is here to stay. However, there is a huge demand for classic Range Rovers too, people want their own piece of history.
So we are going to share with you some information on some of the wonderful classic Range Rovers that have been developed over the years. Let’s start with that very first model:
The Range Rover (Classic) 1970 3 Door 3.5 Litre V8 134Hp
When the original Range rover was released it was never designed to be a luxury 4×4. The earlier models were more sided to being an off road car that can be used on the road, rather than the other way around as they are these days. The arrival of the Range Rover was a huge success, and for many collectors of classic Range Rovers, this first edition will always be the most sought after.
The very first Range Rover was in its famous green colour, it is still in exhibition at the Land Rover centre in Huddersfield. Its original name of Range Rover has now been subsequently changed to that of Range Rover Classic; this is to differentiate it from its successors.
The Range Rover (Classic) 1981 5 Door 3.5 Litre V8 135Hp
By 1981 the 5 door version was released and many new features were added. Electric windows, alloy wheels, air con and a completely revised door trim. The interior saw a slight buff up too with walnut door cappings, whilst the rear seats were pushed back 3 inches. The engine also had a higher compression with extra torque.
The Range Rover 1984 5 Door 3.5 Litre V8 155Hp
The 1984 version came with a new Lucas fuel injection system which increased the power to 155Hp. For the first time the front were able to be reclined and the doors included built in speakers. There was a new interior look with new carpet and headlining, with either a bronze or silver coloring.
The Range Rover Vogue Turbo D 1986 5 Door 2.4 Litre 112Hp Turbo Diesel
This model came with a new 2.4 intercooled turbo diesel engine; the specs included 112hp with 4200rpm. They also added some new tyres which were designed to be able to cope with the increase of the top speed.
It also included roll reducing suspension for the first time and a brand new 4 speed auto gearbox.
Range Rover P38A 1995 2.5 Litre BMW M51 Turbodiesel I6
On the 25th anniversary of the Range Rover came a new generation, this particular model included a BMW 6 cylinder turbo diesel engine which also included an injection pump from Bosch. This diesel injection system was the first one to include electric controls. This engine was a result of BMW becoming owners of the Rover group.
